Theories of Atonement

I think what we are talking about are theories of atonement. How exactly did Jesus "forgive" our debt?

There are usually six theories of atonement listed. I remember them discussed in Brian McLaren's The Story We Find Ourselves In, which I would highly recommend.

Here is a link excerpt of that story talking about atonement. I don't have to time right this minute to do much more. Maybe I could write a post about each theory.

Here are some other links. I haven't look these over very well. They may be misleading or wrong.

I didn't read them all, but a few.

Whatever the answer is, I think it's thoroughly scriptural, but it's not going to look like a bunch of verse-here, verse-there, cobbled together. I'm done with that, humbly-submitted.

Studying Jesus, it does seem that he relates to people like, "Who do you think you are, holding others in judgment? God doesn't have ought against them, but you do."

This doesn't erase the consequences of sin, of course.

JESUS "good news" doesn't look like the "good news" I've been told and have told. It's different; it's not the Four Spiritual Laws. It's better. The Kingdom is here.
