1984

Bush gave the same message to Mexican President
Vicente Fox, who called Sunday to express concern about what he called the possibility of a "militarized" border between the two nations. Bush assured Fox that any military support would be administrative and logistical and would come from the National Guard and not the Army, according to a news release from Fox's office.

I have tried to be optimistic. But I find I no longer trust the President. Is there really such a threat that we need to deploy 1000's of National Guard Troops to the Mexican border? I'm not an expert, but it won't put a dent in the drug trade. It will stop people from entering illegally. I know it is "illegal" but sometimes people break the law on purpose and pay the fine.

My fear is that as in Orwell's 1984, we will soon find that the official stance has changed from not militarizing the border to militarizing the border and that of course was their stance all along.

This is not a time to close ourselves off to the world. This is a time to expand our blessings into the world.

It's an interesting situation. That is for me, since it hardly affects me personally on a day to day basis. I'm sure it's not interesting but devastating to those on both sides who are dealing with it.

I heard something interesting on a Fox News Show as we were flipping channels. It was "Kinky", I guess he's a guy who is running for governor in Texas. Anyway, Kinky pointed out that border control is for both sides. He told a story how some people will hire the illegals promising them the moon, and the illegals work for them and when payday comes the employer calls border patrol to come pick them up. Nice American hospitality. Kick em when they're down.

I don't know what the right thing to do is. I don't envy those who have to make those decisions that's for sure.

But I do see both sides. Open borders allow the drug trade to flow freely unchecked for the most part. Closed borders keep out the very types of people this land came from--those searching for a better life.

Which is more important? Argh. Not an easy choice. And that's not even all sides of the issue!

My point is not a question of the issue of immigration, legal or illegal. My point is President Bush is moving the National Guard to the Mexican border. That seems like a very pointed move.

According to a couple of 5th graders in Casey, the Rapture (although they had a different name) will occur on June 6th this year. If they're right (Nat didn't know what they were basing their knowledge on) perhaps Bush won't have enough time to do much damage. Well...except for those "left behind".

Just a reminder of why I lurk, but rarely post a comment.

Honestly, I don't know much about it.

But I do have to wonder a bit--why such focus on the border at this point in time and could it have anything to do with National Security and the war?

Gil-- I'll be sure to get my stuff in order, June 6th--whew not much time. :)
